President Elect Donald Trump

As the new year is quickly approaching, take a few minutes to reflect on the year that was 2016.

As we all know, a turbulent presidential election concluded with a Republican presidential elect, Donald Trump. Big news also included the capturing of the powerful drug lord, Joaquín (El Chapo) Guzmán, a zoo in Cincinnati killed the soon to be internet sensation: Harambe, Leonardo DiCaprio finally winning his first Oscar, and Simone Biles stealing the show at a scandal-filled Summer Olympics.

We also remember legends who have passed away this year: big names like Muhammad Ali, Alan Rickman, Prince, Arnold Palmer, Craig Sager, and Jose Fernandez.

In sports, we witnessed history being made in every major sport. In major league baseball, the Chicago Cubs broke their 108 year curse and won the World Series. The NBA’s Cleveland Cavaliers made the city champions again as they broke the town’s 52 year drought of not winning a major sport championship. In the NFL, Colin Kaepernick went down on a knee in his anti-American protest, and Peyton Manning went out on top as he lead the Denver Broncos to a third Super Bowl title. Alabama, the powerhouse of college football, rolled over everyone and won their 16th national championship. Finally, one of the greatest NCAA basketball championships of all time ended with a Villanova buzzer beating victory.

Technologically, Pokémon Go was the most trending app of the year. Apple unveiled the iPhone 7 and the removal of its headphone jack.

The top artists on Spotify were Drake, Justin Bieber, Rihanna, Twenty One Pilots, and Kanye West. The music of 2016 was complimented by super cool new dance moves like dabbing, whipping, nae-naeing, ju-juing, and hitting the quan.

Other major headlines included the death of the Cuban leader, Fidel Castro. After controlling every aspect of the island for nearly five decades, he passed away at the age of 90. President Barack Obama also opened doors to the country that was only 90 miles away. The United States reopened its embassy in Havana and terminated their embargo. The Zika virus spread from Africa to various countries throughout the world.

Whether you like it or not, 2016 was definitely a year that you’re going to remember.
