Top Streamed Songs of 2016

2016 was a crazy year for music and artists from all genres broke through into the music scene with hit songs. From Desiigner to Twenty One Pilots, new artists were the big names. Like most years, these songs were ridiculously overplayed, so if you wanna cover your ears and cry every time you hear one of these, then I’m sorry. To be honest, I might cry along with you. Anyways, these are the top 10 most streamed songs of 2016 from Spotify in no particular order and how I rate them.

Spotify

“Closer” by The Chainsmokers ft. Halsey: The Chainsmokers broke through with this smash hit that just makes you feel the need to sing along. “We ain’t ever getting older” is something that everyone can relate to, and everyone wants to feel. This song was great the first five times I heard it, but after you listen to the lyrics, it honestly makes no sense. I would rate it a 4/10.

“Black Beatles” by Rae Sremmurd ft. Gucci Mane: The song that brought about the famous ‘Mannequin Challenge’ lands on the most streamed songs of 2016. Even Paul McCartney got involved!! I know everyone agrees that your social media feed was trash when all you heard was “Black Beatles” and saw people standing still. For that reason, I have a huge bias against this song and I rate it a 5/10.

“Panda” by Desiigner: Brrrrrrrrrrrraaaaahhhhhh Panda Panda Panda Panda. Even your grandma knows this song, which is kind of weird. The song is so dang catchy, and you’re lying if you say it wasn’t stuck in your head at some point this year. This song, like “Closer”, makes no sense but I could care less. I rate it a 7/10 straight banger.

“One Dance” by Drake: This song is a jam. Everything Drake has touched the past few years has been gold, and this song is no different. The wavy vibes and his rap/singing just makes you smile and groove along. It’s hard to think of a better made song from the beat to the lyrics and everything in between. This song is a 10/10.

“Lean On” by Major Lazer: I personally love this song. The electronic beats are always fun, and Major Lazer does a great job of blending the lyrics and his beats. This song was popular for a while and was a great party song, but was never a #1 hit. I rate this song a 7/10.

“7 Years” by Lukas Graham: This song is an emotional roller-coaster that takes you through the life of a depressed man. This song has very powerful lyrics and a great message. The song is great, and although it was overplayed, it never really got annoying for me. I rate this an 8/10.

“Work” by Rihanna ft. Drake: This song just makes you want to dance. Rihanna makes a great song out of just mumbling and having a great beat. Drake steals the show on this song, and his verse is unbelievable. This song is very solid. I rate it a 6/10.

“Stressed Out” by Twenty One Pilots: This was #10 on the list, and I personally changed the radio every time this song came on. I just listened to it all the way through for the first time, and it isn’t bad, but I don’t love it. Twenty One Pilots broke through this year and made some great songs. I rate this one a 5/10.

“Love Yourself” by Justin Bieber: Bieber is back. Similar to Drake, Justin Bieber just seems to only produce hits. This song is much different than the other EDM songs he has been a part of lately. Cold Water was #11 on this list, but I think Love Yourself is so much better. Bieber goes soft on this and sings about his ex in a fun and cool way. This song is amazing, and every time I hear it, I like it more. I would rate this a 10/10.

“I Took a Pill in Ibiza” by Mike Posner: Mike Posner kind of disappeared after his song like 5 years ago. Everyone knows “Cooler Than Me”, but Posner reinvented himself in his time away from the spotlight and came back with a fantastic song. He uses EDM, R&B, and Pop to create a song that is now up for Song of The Year at the Grammys. This song was madly overplayed, but I still rate it a 9/10.
