Bowling team strikes back
The boys bowling team walks into Brunswick Zone at 4 p.m. Practice begins once they get to the alley. Throw after throw; the heavy bowling balls fly across the slick lanes as the team hits strike after strike.
Logan Coty (12) is a dedicated and hard-working member of the team. To Coty, the team is more than just an after-school sport
“The bowling team is more than just a team, it’s a family. We’ve got a lot of guys coming out here and it’s more than just bowling. You just gotta have fun and do what you like,” Coty said.
That seems to be the mentality of the bowlers on the team. Jake Morris (12) is a first-year bowler.
“My friends got me into bowling. The thing that drives me is just the high scores and having success at the lanes with the boys,” Morris said. “When I get a 600 series, it makes me want to comeback and bowl that 700 series the next day. That’s what it’s all about.”
Morris said that he looks forward all day to bowling at 4 p.m.
Team bonding is something that all of the players enjoy. According to Ben Kushnir (12), it’s one of his favorite parts about being a part of the team.
The traditions of the team contribute to the strong bonds among the players.
“I would say the biggest tradition is going to fast food places after practice. We go to a different fast food place after [every] practice or game,” Nick McNamara (12) said.
With this, the bowlers developed a new team lingo.
“A lot of us are too lazy to say out the full names, so we just say one letter abbreviations for each of the restaurants we go to,” McNamara said
For example, Wendy’s is “Y” and Chipotle is “E”.
Aside from all the fun and games, there is a common mentality and desire to win amongst the team. Becoming undefeated conference champions is a direct result of the winning mentality and wanting to be the best they can be.
After the regular season, the boys went on to participate in Regionals. Senior Cooper Guillaume was selected to participate in Regionals.
“That was actually really exciting. We got fourth at Regionals and we were four points of from second place,” Guillaume said.
The score the team had at Regionals allowed them to qualify for Sectionals. Guillaume (12) and the other bowlers ended their run for State at Sectionals.
“When we got to Sectionals, we were really expecting to go to state, but for some reason, we had a really bad day. I don’t think anyone bowled that well. It was sad to not advance,” Guillaume said.
According to members of the team, it was a very fun season and bowling together was a great experience. The team will be losing eight seniors next year. Six played on Varsity and two played on JV.
