Powderpuff game a worthwhile experience
Coming from no experience with football, I didn’t know what to expect from the Powderpuff games.
Powderpuff is a sport in which females have the opportunity to play football while the males cheer them on — a little different from your traditional football.
This was my first football game, and I enjoyed it. From my perspective, it was more of a social event than a sporting event. My friends and I spent most of the time talking to each other and occasionally paying attention to the game.
“I love the food and socialization and just being with friends,” Kayla Kalu(12) said.
I completely agree with Kalu — Powderpuff is a perfect event to casually catch up with friends. Although I do like social events like this, I’d like to see Powderpuff also be treated as a sporting event and not as much as social gathering.
Despite the lack of knowledge I have of sports, this event was very engaging because of Powderpuff’s reversal of gender roles. Being a female, it was a pleasure to see a shift in gender roles and support my fellow females for what they believe in.
“I honestly think that it’s really fun to show people that girls could be really sporty too. And that we can be just as good as guys,” Gabby Sarimento (12) shared.
As a female, I think it was nice to see women on the field and men on the side cheering for the players. It was a pleasure to see women not getting judged on what sport they should play.
While I was enjoying catching up with my friends and watching the game, I noticed that only a few people were sitting at the the bleachers. I truly feel that this event could be more enjoyable if there was more student interaction. I understand that it is on a school night, so it might be difficult for students to come, but I think it was worth it. It was a good way to start of homecoming week.
“Powderpuff should be a national sport, every person should do it. It’s just so much fun,” Tayla Wilkerson (12), one of the players, said.
Overall, I am glad that I made the decision to go to this event. But I believe there could be room for improvement.
Advertising it earlier on and getting people fired up about Powderpuff would be a start. In the upcoming years, I would like to see more engagement with the crowd to make it more of a sporting event than a social event.
