Fuller House, Fuller Heart

I think it’s safe to say we have all seen at least one episode of the classic television show, Full House. The show stopped making new episodes in 1995, which is before any of us were born. However, the show still airs today. Every weeknight when I was in elementary school, my mom and I would watch Full House on the family room couch. My mom would then give some cliché talk about life lessons, sort of like how Danny Tanner did to his three kids. She used his sappy talks at the end of episodes as a chance to teach her two young boys some as well. I guess it kind of worked out though, I’m not that bad of a person. So thanks Mr. Tanner.

Anyway, I think I speak for everyone when I say it has been way too long since I’ve heard the words “You got it, dude” or “How rude!” Luckily for us, the show has made a comeback! After twenty one years, the cast of Full House has come together for a brand new Netflix original series, Fuller House. I don’t get how it can be an “original” series, considering it was an existing idea, but anyway, DJ, the oldest of the three Tanner sisters, is a recently widowed single mother of three. If you’re thinking that sounds familiar, it’s because Danny Tanner had the exact same situation in the original series.

DJ realizes she can’t raise these kids all alone so her sister, Stephanie, and the ever-so -delightful Kimmy Gibbler step up and move in. If you’re thinking there’s something missing, IT’S BECAUSE THERE IS. I’m kind of upset the Olsen twins are not returning as Michelle, and by “kind of” I mean I’m on the verge of sobbing…So it looks like I won’t be hearing “You got it, dude!” afterall.

The rest of the cast returns to the original San Franciscan household to further kick in the nostalgia. The same actors that played Danny Tanner, Joey, Uncle Jesse, Aunt Becky, and even Steve are back!

Now after finishing the entire first season in about 24 hours, I am still unsure about how I feel about the show. There were parts where I thought it was so cheesy and stupid, yet there were still moments that made me laugh and love the show all over again.

Starting with the things that grinded my gears: the set. The set is well, a set. The original Full House house felt like a home and looked normal and real. In the newer show, you can tell that it is clearly fake and some of the original 90’s magic is lost. Also, quick question: Has anyone else ever realized that the set doesn’t match up with the actual house ? I don’t know what the set designers were thinking.

Also, I understand that some of the stars haven’t been acting since 1995, but man, they really needed to take some classes in between to polish those acting skills. Just about all of the characters, with the exception of John Stamos, had moments where it was almost too bad to continue watching. I know, I’m being a little harsh, but it’s true.

Aside from the cheesy and cliché moments, I really did enjoy the reunion. Again, I stayed up all night waiting on the release date, so I might be a little biased. I loved being able to watch the characters from one of my favorite shows come back to life. It’s very similar to the original series, but I’m okay with that. If they changed it any more than they did, it would have lost it’s spark.

Since the Olsen twins didn’t return, obviously the cast still has to acknowledge them in the show. Throughout the episodes the characters all make references to both the character Michelle and the real Olsen twins. They all slide in little moments pointing out their absence and it’s hysterical. The writers throw in so much shade. I love it.

Lastly, since DJ Fuller, formerly known as DJ Tanner, has three kids of her own, there’s some new actors thrown into the mix. The middle child, Max, is adorable and hilarious. The addition of her boys makes the show feel new and lively, while still appealing to a younger audience. The only downside to this is sometimes this makes it feel like you’re watching a Disney channel show. And I’m not talking about That’s so Raven, I’m talking Dog with a Blog stupid. In fact, some of my Netflix suggestions after watching it were shows like that.

DJ, Stephanie, and Kimmy end up teaching their kids valuable lessons just like they were taught in the earlier version. After watching Fuller House, I just wanted to spend time with my family, because I saw how much the Tanners valued theirs. Because of this I actually started to watch the show for a second time. This time, with my mom.  Now it’s been about seven years since elementary school, and somehow the Tanner gang has made things go full circle. Luckily, because of the reboot, I am able to watch the same show and same characters again with her. So thanks, Mr. Tanner, again.

If you don’t have a Netflix account either buy one or beg, borrow, or steal if you have to. Fuller House is a show that will remind you of childhood memories and bring back your love for the Tanner gang, if it even ever left.
