As the weather shifts from season to season, so does senior Livy Tran’s athletic journey.
Each season brings a fresh opportunity to display her skills; whether it be on the diving board, vault, or track, it’s clear to see the passion she has for each sport.
Tran is a student who has balanced responsibilities for both school and extracurriculars.
Being involved in three sports — diving, gymnastics, and track —while also being an active member of multiple clubs, including SPARK, National Honor Society (NHS), and Student Council Executive Board, takes up a lot of her free time.
With many extracurriculars, she also makes time for the classes she takes, putting in effort and dedication.
Passion for Sports
Tran’s passion for sports started at different stages in her life: tumbling and flipping at the age of two, running in fifth grade, and diving since her freshman year.
This year marks 15 years of gymnastics for her, making it a significant part of her life. She has been part of the varsity team since her freshman year and also participates in club gymnastics outside of school.
Tran reflected on her many successful moments, as an individual and with a team, one being her freshman year when the gymnastics team placed second at state.
“It wasn’t just the placing; the team environment was super exciting, and there was a lot of energy, which is what made it fun,” Tran said.
That bond really helped her understand how important building relationships with others is, especially with her coaches.
Tran explained that she’s been with her gymnastics club coaches since she started, and they really helped shape her into the gymnast and athlete she is now.
Similarly, Tran has been with her diving coach, Patrick Tener, since her sophomore year.
“She’s grown a lot,” Tener said.
He added that Tran has really stepped up and taken a lot of leadership roles, helping and encouraging everyone.
Tener mentioned that other schools have commented on how positive everyone is while supporting one another at away meets. Tran plays a big role in contributing to this positivity by encouraging team members to stay engaged during practices and setting an example for the team.
Tran also takes this approach on the track and field team.
“The team is really big, so it’s nice to meet a lot of new people,” Tran added.
Tran’s event during the season is mainly hurdles, making her closer to other hurdlers. They get through the ups and down together, including the rough conditions of meets, which strengthens their bond.
Balance
Michelle Tran, Tran’s mom, commented on how hardworking, determined, and driven Tran really is.
“She uses every spare bit of free time she has at school, taking advantage of all of those opportunities,” Mrs. Tran said.
As Tran’s mom, she supports her in many different ways, like cooking her meals, doing her laundry, and providing unwavering support.
“She takes responsibility for a lot of these things, but we help wherever we can,” Mrs. Tran added.
When looking at all of Tran’s accomplishments, Mrs. Tran points out a few that stand out. These include winning the state vault contest as a freshman, going to nationals for club gymnastics, and going to state for diving. Academically, Mrs. Tran is proud of her daughter’s motivation with college applications right now, as it can be a stressful time.
“Despite the medals, I’m most proud of her dedication to the sports and how she manages to also have a life outside of athletics,” Mrs. Tran added.
Balancing countless responsibilities, whether it’s academically or sport-related, can be challenging, so Tran shared some advice about how she manages her time.
“I really use my study halls to get my work done, and I just communicate with my coaches a lot, which is really helpful,” Tran said.
