Logan is the third movie in the Wolverine series, and the main character Logan (Hugh Jackman) is one of the last remaining mutants in the X-Men universe. His famed healing powers aren’t what they used to be; he shakes and scars cover his body.  He is told by Professor X (Patrick Stewart) to protect a young mutant, Laura Kinney (Dafne Keen).

Kinney is the 23rd attempt to make another Wolverine, but this has been their first successful attempt. However, Kinney is more evolved than Logan. Her claws are made of a rare indestructible material. This is the first time director, James Mangold, and star, Hugh Jackman, got to partake in the creation of an R-rated X-Men movie. Logan is R-Rated because of the strong language and violence.

The movie starts with a Deadpool 2 teaser where Deadpool refers to Logan’s healing powers. The action starts right away as Logan wakes up in his limo with street thugs attempting to take his tires.

After dropping off a client at his destination, one of the main villains, Pierce, enters his vehicle asking if he has seen a Mexican lady named Gabriella and a little girl named Laura. Logan has a hideout past the border where he, Professor X, and supporting character Caliban are staying.

The next day, the limo company assigns Logan to pick up two people: Gabriella and Laura. When he sees who it is, he tries to leave, but Gabriella gives him some money so he can  bring them to the Canadian border in return. They agree to leave  the following day.

Logan shows back up and sees Laura missing and Gabriella dead. He returns to his ranch and Caliban notices the trunk is open, and there is stuff that doesn’t belong to Logan. Pierce shows up looking for Laura. Laura, of all people, throws a pipe at Pierce, knocking him out. Caliban attempts to leave him in the middle of nowhere, but he wakes up and has backup. Ten trucks pull up to the ranch looking for Laura. They send three men inside to get her. You don’t get to see Laura’s first fight scene; however, you see the outcome as she rolls the head of one of the men towards Pierce, starting another fight scene where you see Laura in action for the first time. Logan, Professor X, and Laura escape. Unfortunately,  Caliban gets left behind, and they are able to get him to turn against Logan in order to track him.

In order to take Logan down, Pierce creates a younger Wolverine (X-24). The new Logan isn’t able to think for himself, as he is just a killing machine.

The last thing they have to do is cross the Canadian border, but Pierce and his men are waiting for him. In the final fight scene, they are able to take down everyone except for 24. Logan tries to behead him, but he can’t because he’s not strong enough. Before 24 can make his final strike, Laura shoots him with an adamantium bullet, killing 24.

I would give this movie a 10/10 because it has everything you can expect in a superhero movie and more. The choreography in the fight scenes is amazing. Mangold made great use of the R-rating with more blood and gore than the usual superhero movies without it being too cheesy, and there are a total of 86 swears or derogatory terms used throughout the movie.  The strongest parts of this movie are all of the fight scenes; they are extremely action-packed and fun to watch. I like that there are a lot of them scattered throughout the movie to add to the storyline. I also like the new character Laura. She is a beast in fight scenes and her character has a unique way of carrying herself.

There is one weakness in this movie. When there aren’t fight scenes, the conversations they have can start to get boring and drag on for longer than they need to. It doesn’t take away from the movie, but it’s easy to doze off during these scenes.

If you’re a fan of Wolverine or the X-Men in general, this movie is a must-see.  If you just want to go watch a movie, I recommend this movie because it’s not hard to follow overall, the characters explain their roles and their powers enough for you to understand, and it’s an amazing action movie that you will want to watch again and again.

I’m happy there weren’t too many commercials about this movie, but I believe there was the right amount of hype.  Since it was well known this would be both Hugh Jackman’s and Patrick Stewart’s last movie as their respective characters, there were high expectations going in.  Go watch Logan. It may be early in the year, but it’s going to be one of the best movies of 2017.
