Senior lunch release is easily the biggest perk of being a senior. Not only do you get a full period to eat, but you can actually leave the school. Now that second semester is in full swing, seniors have mastered how to get the most out of their fifty minutes of freedom.

The biggest dilemma seniors face is deciding where to eat. While most enjoy the comfort of heading home, it is still quite popular to dine out. With the help of seniors, here are the best places to eat during lunch release (all these places are either extremely delicious, relatively cheap, within a close proximity to the school, or simply just plain-ole fun):

Eloise

“Eloise is by far the most underrated cafe in Vernon Hills,” said Maddie Warren (12).

This gem is located right off Milwaukee (by Chick-fil-a and across from the mall). From the unique and tasty sandwiches to the sweet pastries, what’s not to love? While the slightly higher price may be a minor setback, it is well worth it.

Roti

Roti is actually pretty healthy as its menu is solely Mediterranean food. The fun seating and casual atmosphere creates a great spot for lunch! Roti is typically pretty buzzing, but it is close to the school (next to the Starbucks on Milwaukee), making it a great choice to stay on time. It is similar to Chipotle in the sense that you can build your own meal, just with a new Mediterranean spin!

Hallsted Deli

This Deli near Tom & Eddie’s has quality, homemade sandwiches and soups, with reportedly good prices– check out their 10% off student discount! “It tastes fresh and that’s why I love it,” said Serena Panos (12).

Mariano’s

Not many people think to head over to a grocery store, but it is actually a really smart choice! The food there is not only affordable, but super fresh and delicious. Anyone can find something to eat as the choices are endless. There is a great salad bar, sushi bar, and made-to-order pizza and sandwiches. Just make sure you leave school right when the bell rings to allow yourself enough time to enjoy your meal.

Sonic Challenge

Seriously one of the oddest ways seniors have spent their lunch release. The challenge is to drive to Sonic, a 25 minute drive, and make it back to school in time for next period. You know a senior has taken on this challenge if you see them dead-on sprinting in the halls, a burger and Coke in hand. While this is not typically recommended, it sure seems exciting!
